IL MUCCHIO - Il Mucchio [1970] Italian Symphonic Prog (Italy)

IL MUCCHIO was an Italian group that released one album in the beginning of the seventies. The musicians were: Maurizio Rivoltella, Sandro Zane, Luciano Zanardo, Sergio Piazza and Marino Rebeschini. It is not known which instruments they played in the group, except for Rebeschini, who was the drummer. The music and lyrics in this album are by a non-group member Pino Donaggio. The group disappeared soon after the release of the album but before this they did release a few singles in similar style to the album. These singles are included in the Mellow records CD reissue of the album.
The only album was released already in 1970. It is one of the first Italian progressive albums and therefore important. A few other Italian groups like NEW TROLLS and LE ORME had already released an album but perhaps this album by IL MUCCHIO can be regarded as the first truly progressive Italian album (?). It certainly is musically close to the more famous symphonic groups, which emerged soon after in the beginning of the seventies, and with keyboard work throughout the album. However, it does not contain long instrumental sections that are typical for the later symphonic groups.
IL MUCCHIO is an interesting group from the beginning of the Italian progressive movement.

ESPIRITU - En Vivo - 2004 [2005] Symphonic Prog (Argentina)

This top notch Argentinian progrock band was rooted in ’69 when singer Fernando Bergé and guitar player Osvaldo Favrot founded Onda Corta. After many changes in the line-up the band featured Carlos Goler on drums, Claudio Martinez on bass and of course prime movers Fernando and Osvaldo in ‘72. Under their new name ESPIRITU the band gave a serie of gigs in ’73 and released a single entitled “Soy la Noche”. It was received well, ESPIRITU started to rehearse for their debut album and added a keyboard-player, first David Lebon but when he left Gustavo Fedel was willing to replace him. In this line-up ESPIRITU released their first album entitled “Crisalida” in ’75, a fine symphonic rock record with echoes from GENESIS and YES. The band was at their pinnacle: good response from both fans and the press and spectacular live shows. Unfortunately Fedel decided to leave the band, he was replaced by Ciro Fogliatta and these musicians released the second album entitled “Libre y Natural”. Because of lack of support from the record company, musical disputes and a lot of stress ESPIRITU disbanded in ’76.
In ’81 the record company invited Osvaldo and Fernando to make a new album, they had to search for new musicians because the other three original members were not able to join or not to trace. In ’82 ESPIRITU finally released “Espiritu III”, a year later followed by “En Movimiento” and in ’96 the live album “Espiritu Live” in The Obras stadium ‘82” was released (“En Vivo En Obras” was the original title). In 2001 Osvaldo started to search for musicians in order to resurrect ESPIRITU. Despite the terrible circumstances in Argentina to make progrock (the media ignores it totally!) he succeeded, Osvaldo’s son Fredirico was one of them! In 2003 this new line-up released “Fronteras Magicas”. It was presented live in the ND Theatre on December 10th in 2003.
The first album “Crisalida” is their best effort, it contains beautiful and alternating compositions with many changing atmospheres (from mellow with acoustic guitar to up-tempo with heavy electric guitar), lush keyboards and some vocal harmonies. The most obvious hints are GENESIS and YES but the music is also often compared with the early Italian progrock like PFM and SEMIRAMIS, very melodic with lots of captivating musical ideas.

SYMPHONIC SLAM - Symphonic Slam [1976] Prog Related (Canada)

Symphonic Slam was mainly about Timo Laine (born in Finland, and moved to America as a child), and his polyphonic guitar synthesizer. The rest of the band was filled out by drummer John Lowery, and keyboardist David Stone.Timo had been playing the club circuit for a while, but it wasn't until he relocated to Canada that things began to happen. It was there that Symphonic Slam was discovered by A&M Records. What set them apart was the $10,000 360 systems guitar synthesizer prototype. This led to the release of their 1976 self-titled album. They toured, and played gigs with some of the big names of the time (Rush, The Rolling Stones, and the Village People). Soon they were asked to go to L.A. to work on a new album. Not being interested in this tack, Stone took the opportunity to defect to Rainbow. After the album was completed, A&M wasn't pleased (they wanted disco). Timo took it to Canada, and created his own label on which to release it. It had some modest success, but Laine wasn't interested in going back to L.A. to fight disco once again.Musea's 2001 re-release of the first album inspired Timo to get back on the horse. Apparently he had been working on another album for many years. "Her Fire" is supposed to be released some time in the future. He is also working on an instrumental solo project. You can hear some influences of Styx, Kansas, Wakeman, Emerson, a bit of E.L.O., and even some funk. However, this is not like most of what we consider to be the classic '70s progressive sound. Some of those qualities are woven in, and there are some lovely moments. But make no mistake, this is mid 70's rock and roll at the core. The main point of interest here is really the fact that Laine basically pioneered the synth guitar. It was a very new thing at the time.

JONESY - Growing [1973] Heavy Prog (United Kingdom)

JONESY were an early 70's band in the style of KING CRIMSON but with the unusual element of electric trumpet from Alan Bown. Other band members were John Evan-Jones - guitar & backing vocals, Jamie Kaleth - lead vocals & keyboards (including some excellent Mellotron), Gypsy Jones - lead vocals, bass guitar & recorders and Plug Thomas - percussion and backing vocals. They recorded three albums on the Dawn Label "No Alternative", "Keeping Up" and "Growing". All are strong with the aforementioned KING CRIMSON influences. All can be approached with a degree of assurity but "Keeping Up" is probably the strongest of the three. All were reissued on CD by Korean label S-Wan. Strongly recommended..!

NAUTILUS - 20,000 Miles Under The Sea (1978) Symphonic Prog (Switzerland)

Nautilus was a Swiss Band (not the German one), that combined the talents of Urs Lerch on bass, Dieter Ruf on guitars, Peter Fibich on drums, Ralph Stucki on keyboards, and Christian Bauer on guitars. Ruf, Stucki, and Bauer all contributed to the vocals. They only released two albums (1978's "20,000 Miles Under the Sea" and 1980's "Space Storm"), and not much is actually known about them. It's an obscure band, to say the least. This band is a bit of an oddity, given the time period. At a time when prog was on its way out, they decided to record psychedelic, proto-metal inspired, symphonic rock (sound weird? It should). There is a strong early Uriah Heep component, with touches of John Lord, a smidgen of Genesis, a dash of Black Sabbath, and even some ELO style harmonies. But that's not all. Don't forget the Psychedelic component. The best analogy I can make, is imagine if Iron Butterfly went symphonic. So, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The lyrics, and vocals can come off as cheesy at times, but the music stands up. There is solid composition here, and it's much different than other symphonic bands of the '70s. Hats off to these guys for attempting it in the age of punk and new wave.

TOMORROW'S GIFT - Goodbye Future [1973] Jazz Rock/Fusion (Germany)

Tomorrow's Gift (along with similar bands, Frumpy and Joy Unlimited) originally formed as a blues and soul-rock band evolving by the end of the ‘60s into progressive rock, but still remind faithful to their roots. The line up consisted of Ellen Meyer (Vocals) Carlo Karges (guitar, percussion), Manfred Rurup (organ), Wolfgang Trescher (flute), Bernd Kiefer (bass) and Olaf Casalich (drums). Casalich was later replaced by Gerd Paetzke. In 1970 the young band (three members were still teenagers) set out to release their debt double vinyl. As expected the production yielded a rough unpolished edge giving the album the typical vintage progressive sound. The album Features an abundance of guitars, organ, flute and drum solos accompanied by Meyer’s vocals which have been likened to Janis Joplin. Most believe this album would have proved stronger if edited onto just a single disc! After their self titled effort the band had split in 1971. It was now down to Manfred Rurup and Bernd Kiefer the keep the flame lit. Recruiting “Zabba” Linder (drums) the band pushed forward as a three piece, going on to release ‘Goodbye Future’ (1972). The sound of the band had totally changed, with a more technical edge and much improved sound production. They took a more Jazz mind into the studio resulting in a mainly instrumental Jazz-rock album, focusing on the keen interplay between keyboard and bass. The overall sound was quite varied: incorporating the lighter Canterbury-jazz sound with an almost Zappa-esque humour. This was to be the last record under the name Tomorrow’s Gift. In 1973, guitarist Uli Trepte (previously of Guru Guru) joined, only to quit just half a year later and was replaced promptly by sax and clarinet player Norbert Jacobsen. The band now changed their name to Release Music Orchestra under which name they released five records.

ARCO IRIS - Los Elementales [1977] Jazz Rock/Fusion (Argentina)

A leading band in the developpement of the South America progressive rock scene with Los Jaivas and a few others. Their music is a solid combination of jazz rock, ethnic folk with sometimes subtle "spacey" symphonic arrengements. The initial formation is composed by Altar Tokatlián (winds), Gustavo Santaolalla (voice and guitar), Guillermo Bordarampé. They first formed several bands in the 60s (The Rovers, The Blackbyrds, The Crows) to play covers. They finally recorded their first effort back at the end of the 60´s. It´s an orinal mixture of typical Latin folk, acoustic music and 60´s "acid" rock. After the departure of Alberto Cascino, the drummer Horacio Droopy Gianello integrates the band. They record "Suite numero 1" in 1972 also for RCA. The album "Tiempo de resurrección" published the same year will affirm the own musical identity of the band: an outstanding blend of fusion "folk" music with jazz rock. The double LP "Sudamerica o il regresso a la Aurora" represents the summit of the band in term of orchestral achievement. The music offers an unique multi influences rock universe, made of blues, native music, jazz...Released in 1973 "Inti-Raymi" is a good following to their previous effort but generally seen as less captivating. After the spiritual "Ara Tokatlián & Enrique Villegas : inspiracion" (1975) "Los elementales" (1977) will largely put the stress on freak out jazzy rock improvisations. After this classic period the band has continued to produce records until today, reaching their sound in a more new age and mellow jazz direction.

ZONE SIX - Zone Six [1998] Psychedelic/Space (Rock Germany)

The members of ZONE SIX have one intention - to play improvised music. Founded in 1997 by Dave Schmidt and Hans-Peter Ringholz the band is wellknown now in Germany for delivering a mix of psychedelic/space, trance and kraut. They played together with the Hawkwind members Nik Turner and Huw Lloyd-Langton in 1998 and have been seen on many festivals like Hawkfanmeeting or Burg Herzberg open-air. An important role for the band has a very special lightshow to deliver a trippy atmosphere.Changing members and special guests is another part of the band's concept. With the first album they were supported by the female vocalist Jodi Barry. The current line-up consists of Dave Schmidt aka SULA BASSANA (bass), Martin Schorn (synths), Julius-K (guitar) and Walt Jahn (drums). The album 'Live Wired 2004' is an excellent documentation of their live qualities. Six songs as a mix of slowtempo and mind-blowing rocking parts with a total time of 87 minutes on LP - spacy guitars with delay effects and reminiscences to Hawkwind, Pink Floyd and Man. The band also produced the retrospective '10 Years Of Aural Psychedelic Journeys' in 2007 with rare & unreleased tracks of the first decade in the life of ZONE SIX.Recommended to fans of trippy, psych and kraut improvised rock music.

ERRATA CORRIGE - Mappamondo [1991] Italian Symphonic Prog (Italy)

An excellent, yet very obscure, mid-70's Italian progressive, taking a step on from the likes of: PFM, LDF, or IL VOLO, with a very symphonic classically. ERRATA CORRIGE uses multi-guitars, piano, cello, synthesizers, bass, flute and drums. They develop a very complex (dramatic and dreamy) style, blending spacious symphonics with a poetic Italian lyrics. Their superb, gentle vocal harmonies (in Italian) are complimentary to the music. "Siegfried" is the excellent debut album by ERRATA CORRIGE, one of the very best itaprog groups of the Seventies. A classic from Italian Italian Progressive music. "Mappamondo" is their nice second album.
